It was a long winter, but spring is finally on the horizon. What better way to usher in a new season than with a getaway? Day trips, weekend getaways, family vacations -- we’ve got you covered. Here’s a look at some of the top spring getaways near Annapolis, Maryland this springtime.
Back to nature
If you’ve got cabin fever and the only cure is some quality time outdoors, Calvert Cliffs State Park near Lusby and Catoctin Mountain Park (a national park) near Thurmont are both about an hour from Annapolis, and offer hiking, camping, beautiful views and other ways to immerse yourself into spring.
Visit the waterfront
Whether you want a romantic weekend for two or a day trip for the whole family, National Harbor along the Potomac River has a little something for everyone. Located less than 45 minutes away from Annapolis, it’s easy to celebrate spring on the waterfront.
Get in the garden(s)
Spring is the best time to stop to smell the roses (and all the other flowers) at one of Maryland’s outdoor gardens. The Historic London Town & Gardens in nearby Edgewater (15 minutes outside of Annapolis) offers tours, photo shoots, venue rental and more. In Annapolis, the William Paca House and Garden are open for tours after March 23, and the Homestead Gardens offer a relaxing way to shop while deciding what blooms you’d like to plant in your own backyard.
Tour a wine trail
March is Maryland Wine Month, so celebrate by exploring one of the state’s 10 wine trails. We recommend Patuxent Wine Trail, which stretches through Calvert and St. Mary’s counties and visits 7 wineries and vineyards. With the farthest locations on the trail just an hour from Annapolis, it’s easy to get there for a weekend or a day trip. If you’re not up for an entire trail, try Thanksgiving Farm in Harwood, just 20 minutes away from Annapolis. Its tasting room is open April through November.
Hit the (crab and oyster) trail
If wine trails aren’t your thing, try the Maryland crab and oyster trail through Anne Arundel and Howard counties. Visit https://www.visitmaryland.org/driving-tours/mid-bay-central-maryland-crab-oyster-trail for ideas on where to get started.
If you’re looking for a luxurious weekend, there are plenty of options. The Chez Amis Bed & Breakfast in downtown Annapolis offers elegance and hospitality, while the Laurel Grove Inn offers a lovely waterfront view for your B&B stay. Or perhaps you’d like to have tea and then spend the night in the restored Reynolds Tavern. If you’re looking to get out of town, nearby Baltimore offers the elegant 1840s Carroltown Inn boutique hotel, Hotel Brexton (temporarily closed due to a lightning strike, according to its website), and the Gramercy Mansion Bed & Breakfast and Carriage House.
